YAHIDNE, Ukraine — Ukraine's military is making "very tangible progress" in its counteroffensive against Russian forces, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told NBC News on Thursday. He also placed the blame for a lack of peace talks at the door of the Kremlin. Ukrainians "knew this was going to be a hard fight but especially over the last couple of weeks, we are seeing very tangible progress," Blinken said in an interview. He said that he had heard a very detailed report from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who recently visited the front lines, and his military advisers. "I think we are seeing real forward movement," Blinken added.

CNN —Ukraine has opened more than 3,000 criminal cases over Russia’s alleged crimes against children in the country, including dozens of torture cases, Ukrainian prosecutors said Thursday. The reports of alleged torture against children came to light after some Ukrainian territories were retaken from occupying Russian forces. These include 13 alleged cases of sexual violence against children, the youngest of which was a 4-year-old girl, Usenko said. Child pawns of Russia’s warThe treatment of Ukraine’s children by Russia has long been under international scrutiny. A United Nations Security Council briefing last week focused on the war’s impact on Ukraine’s children, with the deportations and treatment of children taking center stage.

Ukraine has made "tactically significant gains" around the besieged city of Bakhmut, a think tank says. Geolocated footage published Thursday shows that Ukrainian troops made gains in Yahidne, around a mile north of Bakhmut, according to Washington DC-based think tank the Institute of the Study of War (ISW). However, it is unlikely that they have many more reserves to commit to the battle, the UK Ministry of Defense said. Along with the gains around Bakhmut, Ukraine's forces have also continued operations in at least three other sectors of the frontline on Friday, according to ISW. REUTERS/Alex BabenkoKYIV, Feb 27 (Reuters) - The commander of Ukrainian ground forces Colonel general Oleksandr Syrskyi visited besieged Bakhmut to boost morale and talk strategy with units defending the town and surrounding villages in eastern Ukraine, the military said over the weekend. Russia has made the capture Bakhmut a priority in its strategy to take control of Ukraine's eastern Donbas industrial region. Now charged with the defence of Bakhmut, Syrskyi has made a number of trips to the town, maintaining the Kyiv's forces will hold it. "Russia may start attacking from three sides from Monday," Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov said in a social media video.
Kyiv on Sunday countered Russian claims to have taken further territory around Bakhmut as Russia seeks to surround the eastern city that Ukraine’s military has defended against withering onslaughts for months. The Wagner Group paramilitary force fighting alongside Russia’s regular army in Ukraine said on Saturday that it had secured control of Yahidne to the northwest of Bakhmut. The press service of Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin posted an image appearing to show Wagner fighters beside a sign marking the entrance to the village, and Mr. Prigozhin confirmed the village had been taken.

Feb 26 (Reuters) - Ukraine's military said on Sunday that Russia conducted unsuccessful offensives near Yahidne over the past day, after Russia's Wagner mercenary group claimed to have captured the village in eastern Ukraine near the focus on intense fighting. The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said in a morning update that Russia keeps concentrating its offensive efforts along the entire Bakhmut front line, were Yahidne is located. Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Saturday his forces had captured Yahidne. But the Ukrainian bulletin said attacks were continuing, citing "unsuccessful offensives" near six settlements, including Yahidne and Berkhivka, in the Donetsk region, which Moscow claims to have annexed. The fierce battles along the front lines in Ukraine's south and east, especially near Bakhmut, now consist of crawling attempts by each side to move the line, sometimes just a few metres at a time.

Feb 25 (Reuters) - Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said forces of his Wagner group had captured the village of Yahidne, just north of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine on Saturday. "At 1900 on 25th February, storm units of the Wagner private military company secured complete control of the locality of Yagodnoye (Yahidne) to the north of Bakhmut," Prigozhin said in the clip. A day earlier, he said Wagner had taken control of Berkhivka, another village on the outskirts of Bakhmut. The months-long struggle for Bakhmut has seen some of the bloodiest attritional fighting of Russia's year-old invasion of Ukraine. Wagner units have suffered heavy losses, prompting Prigozhin to complain bitterly that the Russian defence establishment has failed to properly acknowledge their contribution.
